James Elmer Workman Sr.

    BURLINGTON — James Elmer Workman Sr., 79, formerly of Burlington, died on Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at Pettigrew Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Durham.

He was a native of Alamance County, and the son of the late James Preston and Effie Jones Workman.

    Elmer was a graduate of the Altamahaw-Ossipee High School Class of ’42 and he attended The University of North Carolina.

He retired after operating his own paint contracting business for many years.

He was a member of the Christian faith.

Elmer was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

    Survivors include his former wife, Iris Simpson Workman of Burlington; daughter, Sandra W. Greene of Burlington; son and daughterin-law, James "Jimmy" Elmer Workman, Jr. and his wife, Martha Reeves Workman, of Carrboro; grandchildren, Melissa Greene Stewart, Michelle Greene Knight, James William Workman, and Kirkpatrick McCray Workman; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Brittany, Wesley, Rebecca, and Matthew; great-stepgrandchildren, Samantha and Devin; sisters, Louise Workman Lewis and Ann Workman Wrenn, both of the Shiloh Community; and several nieces and nephews.

    The funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Christian United Church of Christ by the Rev. Mark Nanny, pastor, and assisted by the Rev. Mark Andes.

The committal will follow at Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 this evening at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory, and at other times at the home located on Trail 5 in Burlington.

    In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to First Christian United Church of Christ, 415 S. Church St., Burlington, N.C. 27215 or Shiloh United Methodist Church, 4718 N.C. 87 North, Gibsonville, N.C. 27249. 3, James Elmer Workman Sr.
