Mrs. Ila Matkins Terrell
GIBSONVILLE — Mrs. Ila Matkins Terrell, 94, of Caswell County, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2008, at 5 a.m., at Edgewood Place in Burlington.
A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of 61 years to the late H. Preston Terrell and daughter of the late L.G. Matkins Sr. and Lydia Fitch Matkins. She received her degree in teaching from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1932 and taught first grade for 39 years at Cherry Grove, Altamahaw-Ossipee, and Stoney Creek Schools. Mrs. Terrell was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Pat Kernodle Sutton and husband Robert of Burlington and Mrs. Carolyn Harris of Elon; grandson, Gary Barber Jr. and wife Susan of Matthews; granddaughter, Julie Kernodle Mc-Ateer and husband Bray of Burlington; great-grandson, Julian Ace McAteer of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Lois Brannock and husband James and Mrs. Gloria DeMarra and husband Jack, all of Burlington.
Mrs. Terrell was preceded in death by seven brothers, Leonard F. Matkins, L.G. Matkins Jr., Worth Matkins, Coy Matkins, Norris Matkins, Clarence Matkins, and William Matkins; a sister, Mrs. Annie Barker; two sons-in-law, Sammy Kernodle and Vern Harris.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at Shiloh United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Stark and the Rev. Reid Dickens officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Rich & Thompson Funeral & Cremation Service in Burlington on Monday evening from 4 to 7 p.m. At other times the family will be at the residence of Mrs. Terrell. She will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
