Christine Boone Fonville

BURLINGTON - Christine Boone Fonville, 102, of Burlington went peacefully to be with her Lord on Saturday, April 8, 2017, after a ten month illness. She was the only surviving child of eight children of the late A.G. (Dolf) Boone and Nancy Margaret Stafford Boone.

In 1923 at the age of eight, Mrs. Fonville sang in a Tom Thumb Wedding in the old Burlington Municipal Building. Later, she sang for many local concerts, theatrical productions, radio programs, funerals, and weddings.

She was a soprano soloist for 35 years at Front Street United Methodist Church; where she, her husband, and two friends started the first mixed couples Sunday school class in the NC Methodist Conference. In 1997 the Charge Conference of FSUMC honored her faithful service to her church by electing her an Honorary Steward and Member of the Administrative Board for Life. Mrs. Fonville had the longest continuous membership at FSUMC (90 years) having joined in 1926.
In 1944, she and her late husband, Robert H. Fonville, Sr., started Fifth Street Cleaners which they operated for thirty-six years. She also operated Robert’s Variety Store for eleven years with her son. She was a skilled seamstress and made clothing, costumes, and draperies and was an outstanding cook. In 1957, she started and sustained the local Boone Family Reunion for 22 years.
She was an active member and president (for four years) of the Burlington Music Club and was active in the NC Federation of Music Clubs and the Burlington Altrusa Club, an organization of business women that only one person from each profession was allowed to join. She was a board member of the Alamance Kidney Foundation that brought the first dialysis units to Alamance County and was one of three founding members of the Burlington Bird Club.
She had a great love for her family, the outdoors (especially growing flowers and watching & identifying birds), history, genealogy, and antiques.

Mrs. Fonville is survived by her son, Robert (Bobby) H. Fonville Jr. of Burlington; a brother-in-law Grady L. Fonville of Greensboro, and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the members and staff of The Home Place and Hospice for their love, help, dedication, and concern during her final illness.

Visitation will be at Front Street United Methodist Church, 136 S Fisher St, at 10 a.m.; with the memorial service at 11 a.m.; followed by burial at Alamance Memorial Park on Tuesday, April 18.

Memorials may be made to her beloved Front Street United Methodist Church or to Hospice.

Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington is assisting the family.
