Miss Mary Ruth Jones
GRAHAM — Miss Mary Ruth Jones , 86, of 215 S. Maple St., Apt. P, Graham died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004 at 1:11 a.m. at Liberty Commons.
She was born August 5, 1918, in Alamance County, North Carolina, the daughter of Thomas Atlas Jones and Ethel Thompson Jones , both deceased. She was a 1935 graduate of Graham High School, and from 1935 to 1942, she worked at Baker-Cammack Hosiery. She belonged to the First Baptist Church in Graham, North Carolina, where she took on many responsibilities, and did community service.
She entered Watts Hospital in Durham in 1942 as a cadet nurse, and joined First Baptist Church in Durham. At this time, membership remains at the First Baptist Church in Durham. She graduated from Watts Hospital in 1945 and worked at Watts Hospital as a nursing supervisor until Watts closed. She moved to Durham Regional Hospital, retiring in 1985. She was an active member in Watts Alumni and served as a past president. She remained a lifetime member. She belonged to Durham Woman’s Club where she was an active member in the past. She was also a member of E.S.A., an educational, social and philanthropic sorority. In 1956, she was awarded North Carolina State Girl of the Year. She is survived by a sister, Katherine Jones Boswell; Katherine’s daughter Cynthia Boswell Webster and her husband, Freo and their children, Charles Freo Webster II, John Kennon Webster, and Corinna Katherine Webster; and her brother Samuel’s children, Larry Jones and wife, Martie, Samuel Jones , and Belinda Kay Jones Bruner.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert "Bobby" Weldon Jones and Samuel H. Jones .
The funeral service will be at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Graham at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, with the Rev. Norman M. Whitney Sr. and Dr. David Kolb conducting the service. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the chapel. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Graham, 224 N. Main St., Graham, N.C. 27253, or to a charity of the donor’s choice, or to dedicated hours to service in the community.
