Winford Eugene Rainey
October 6, 1934 — August 31, 2024
Burlington

Winford Eugene Rainey, fondly known as Wimpy, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2024 at his home in Burlington, North Carolina at the age of 89.

On October 6,1934, he was born to John Wellons and Hazel Davis Rainey in Caswell County, North Carolina.

Wimpy graduated from Anderson High School and Burlington Business College and was then drafted into the United States Army where he dutifully served two years, from 1956-1958. He was employed by M&W Office Supply for several years and after retiring from the office supply business, Wimpy was employed as an amateur softball umpire and at the Shamrock Golf Course. He was a loyal member of Union Ridge Church.

Wimpy was the beloved husband of 68 years to Peggy Jean McKinney Rainey who he married on September 3,1955.

Others left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Robin Johnson and her husband, Jason; son, Tim Rainey and his wife Allison; sister, Sarah Rainey; and a special cousin, Dean Rainey. Wimpy is also survived by his granddaughter, Taylor Arnold and her husband Dylan; his grandson, Austin Rainey; and his special great grandson, Hayden Arnold.

He was a devoted family man and took great pleasure in spending time with his family.

Wimpy enjoyed playing golf every Tuesday with his golfing buddies, fishing with his great grandson, camping at Buggs Island, listening to southern gospel music, and socializing with his neighbors at the Woods of Grove Park community. He will be greatly missed by his family, his neighbors and a multitude of friends. Wimpy’s family was his pride and joy and the greatest role of his life was being “Paps” to his grandchildren.

A funeral service for Wimpy will be held at 3:00PM on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at Union Ridge Church by Rev. Dan Ficklin with the burial to follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 2:45 prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.
For those wishing to make memorial contributions in honor of Wimpy, his family respectfully requests donations be made to Union Ridge Church.
