James Albert Edwards Sr. "Little Colonel"


    CONCORD — James Albert Edwards Sr. "Little Colonel," 84, of 488 Woodend Dr. S.E., died at Five Oaks Manor in Concord on Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, after a serious illness of two days.
    He was born in Alamance County on March 11, 1925, the son of the late Johnny Early Edwards and the late Ettie Gay Cates. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Laura T. Edwards who died on July 5, 2004; and a granddaughter, Christina Marie Edwards.
    "Little Colonel," as he was affectionately known, was a retired truck driver with Associated Transport and a member of Teamsters Union local 391.
    He is survived by two sons, James A. "Jay" Edwards Jr. of Snow Camp and Johnny Early Edwards of Graham; three daughters, Jane E. Honeycutt of Concord, Rebecca "Becky" Rollins of Rockwell, and Loretta Joy Dowd of Burlington; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a brother, George Edwards of Burlington.
    A memorial service will take place at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, at Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Britt. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.
