John Cline Montague

BURLINGTON – John Cline Montague, 83, passed away peacefully at his home on Palm Sunday, April 5, after a year of declining health. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4: 7.
John was born in Garner, NC on July 1, 1936 to George and Edna Montague. He lived in Burlington his entire life. Upon graduation from Walter M. Williams High School in 1954, he started his career with Norfolk Southern Railway. In 1957, he married his soulmate, Carey Patterson, whom he loved and cherished for 62 years. John and Carey were inseparable and built a wonderful life together with extraordinary memories.

John was a beautiful soul! He radiated such a pure sweetness in his smile and the twinkle in his eyes. If he ever met you then he was your friend forever. He had a keen memory and could retell stories from far back. He was foremost humble and always put others before himself. He was so clever and loved to make funny jokes and laugh with others. He gave such wise advice and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need anytime night or day.
Upon his retirement in 1990, John became an avid tennis player. He was a member of Olde Forest Racquet Club and loved being outdoors on the tennis courts with his buddies. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family whom he loved with all his heart. He never missed an opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren. John also loved to cook and everyone wanted “pawpaw’s food” at the family gatherings. He was forever the gracious host and made everyone feel right at home. He was the heartbeat of his family and will be greatly missed.
John is survived by his wife, Carey, and his children, Dreama Montague Dillon and husband, Rhody of Raleigh and Deana Montague and
partner, Jon Skipper of Burlington. He leaves behind four grandchildren: Hayley Dillon Cain and her husband, Brad, and Anna Dillon and her fiancé, David Sibley; John Dean Montague-Smith and Zachary Montague-Smith. John was looking forward to the birth of his first great-grandchild due in June.
He is also survived by his brother, George Montague and wife Barbara, of Ocean Isle Beach and sisters, Shirley Perry of Burlington and Rosalee Rockafellow and husband, Lee, of Sunset Beach and sisterin-law, Betsy Crisp of Newport News, VA. John had numerous nieces and nephews that also loved him dearly.
A private graveside service will be held at Friendship United Methodist Church in Burlington, NC on Thursday, April 9, 2020. To show your love and respect, friends and family are welcome to stop by Rich & Thompson Funeral Home in Burlington on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Friendship United Methodist Church, 4621 Friendship Patterson Mill Road, Burlington, NC 27215 or to the Alamance Civitan Club, 3328 Dr. Pickett Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
