Hassel Allen Byrd  Sr.

    ANDERSON — Hassel Allen Byrd  Sr., 84, of 9894 N.C. 62 South, died Thursday, January 5, 2006, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a week of failing health.

    A native of Caswell County, he was the son of the late Drewry Allen Byrd  and the late Vera Walker Byrd , and was married to the late Louisa Foster Blacknall Byrd , who died in 1994.

Mr. Byrd  was a longtime farmer in Caswell County and he graduated as the valedictorian of Anderson High School in 1939. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre, and graduated from North Carolina State University in 1947. He was a charter member of the Southern Caswell Ruritan and was on the Founding Board for the Piedmont-Triad Farmer’s Market.

    Mr. Byrd  is survived by a daughter, Charles Anna Ribelin and her husband, Paul, of Vinton, Va.; three sons, Hassel  A. Byrd  Jr. and his wife, Dianne, of Burlington, David Byrd  and his wife, Bonnie, of Anderson, and Steven Byrd  and his wife, Kelley, of Summerfield; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wilma Boone of Burlington and Margaret Byrd  of Winston-Salem; and two brothers, Harry Byrd  of Browns Summit and Levi Byrd  of Pittsboro.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; two sisters, Clara Pope and Edna Byrd ; and two brothers, Wilbert Byrd  and Roy Byrd .

    The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 8, 2006, at Bethel United Church of Christ by the Rev. Homer Frye, and the Rev. Walstein Snyder.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

    The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 this afternoon at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory, and other times at the home.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215 or to the Southern Caswell Ruritan, c/o Ervin Miles, 2972 Cherry Grove Road, Yanceyville, N.C. 27379.
