Rev. George M. “Jack” Phillips Jr. BURLINGTON — The Rev. George M. “Jack” Phillips Jr., 84, died at his residence Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015, at 10:04 p.m., following one year of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of 62 years to Kathryn Coleman Phillips, who survives, and the son of George Madison Phillips and Eva Mae Pennington Phillips, both deceased.
Jack grew up in Glencoe Mill Village and attended Pleasant Grove High School and Elon College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Tokyo for three years during the Korean Conflict. Jack was the pastor of Zion Christian Church for 47 years. He was a member of the Men’s Laymen Fellowship. He also worked for Kayser-Roth, retired from General Electric and was a volunteer Chaplain at Alamance Regional Medical Center for seven years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 63, #40 & 8 Honor Society and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. One particular American Legion duty and honor was telling all Alamance Burlington School System first graders about the American flag every fall for several years. Jack enjoyed visiting with church members and those not able to attend church. He also enjoyed watching westerns, Perry Mason, Matlock, Heat of the Night and MASH on TV.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Susan Phillips of Greenville, NC and Libby Phillips of the home; two sons, Gordon Phillips and wife Cheryl of Burlington and David Phillips of Haw River; granddaughter, Jessica Massey and husband Stephen of Graham; honorary grandson, Kevin Holt; brothers-inlaw, James “Dink” Holland and Dillard Witherow, both of Burlington; sister-in-law, Rachel Phillips of Elon; the Coleman family inlaws, Bill Coleman and wife Shelby, Victor Coleman and Teddy Coleman, all of Burlington and Leroy Coleman and John W. Coleman, both of Snow Camp; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Delbert James Phillips, Billie Phillips and Cary Phillips; and seven sisters, Opal Greeson, Pearl Terrell, Mexie Wyrick, Helen Holland, Erma Dell Neal, Jean Witherow and Faye Phillips.
The funeral service will be conducted at Zion Christian Church on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015, at 11 a.m.by the Rev. E. Reid Dickens, the Rev. Rodney Murray and the Rev. Jeanne Neal. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
