Georgie Lee Younger Thompson

Georgie Lee Younger Thompson, 89, of Dallas, Texas passed away at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, Dallas, TX on Friday, April 10, 2026.
A native of Guilford County, she was the wife of the late Robert Bigler Thompson and the daughter of the late Willie J. Younger and the late Violet Woodburn Younger. Georgie spent most of her life in the Burlington area, and, following the death of her husband Bob in 2015, moved to Dallas, Texas to be closer to her son.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Walter W. Zimmerman and Helena Tapias Perdigon, respectively, stepdaughter Carlin Guite, three sisters-in-law, Carol Younger, Annette Younger and Diane Younger, three nephews Buron “Kyle” Younger, Michael T. Younger, II. and Bryan Younger, and one niece Kimberly Thomas.
She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Kelly Lisa Zimmerman and four brothers, Harold Younger, Richard Younger, Michael Younger and Anthony “Tony” Younger.
Georgie retired from Western Electric/AT&T in 1989 after more than 25 years of service. She was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, a non-profit volunteer organization.
Georgie had been a member of Friedens Lutheran Church and Macedonia Lutheran Church, prior to her departure to Texas.
Georgie was devoted to her family, especially her son Walter. Georgie was committed to ensuring that Walter had the opportunity to graduate from Duke University and subsequently obtain his law degree. Georgie displayed her pride in her son’s achievement with the custom license plate “DUKE MOM.” She was a Duke Basketball fan who enjoyed attending games in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Georgie enjoyed spending time at beaches in the Carolinas with Bob, friends and family. You could often find Georgie reading books and working on puzzles when she had a quiet moment. Georgie was known for her chocolate pound cake.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the dedicated staff at Ventana by Buckner, for the excellent care she received in both Memory Care and Skilled Nursing during the final three years of her life. Their kindness, patience, and compassion brought comfort not only to Georgie but to our entire family.
A service to celebrate her life will be conducted at 3:30 pm on Sunday, April 26, 2026 at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington by Chaplain Patrick Cardwell. The family will receive friends from 2:30 pm-3:30 pm prior to the funeral service.
Georgie’s life was deeply affected by Alzheimer’s Disease. Both parents and two brothers died with the disease. Georgie struggled with Alzheimer’s disease in the final years of her life as well. Accordingly, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Duke-UNC Alzheimer Disease Research Center, 2424 Erwin Road, Durham, North Carolina 27705.
