William Lee "Bill" DeWeese


    FLORENCE, S.C. — William Lee "Bill" DeWeese, 77, of Florence, died May 22, 2007, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
    Mr. DeWeese was born July 18, 1929, in Wellford, S.C., to the late Delmas and Bertie Minton DeWeese. He grew up in Burlington, N.C., where he graduated from Burlington High School in 1948. He received a Th.B. from Pilgrim Bible College in Kernersville, N.C., an A.B. degree from Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois, M.Ed. degree from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and near completion of his Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill when his prolonged illness began. Mr. DeWeese was a retired educator for Florence (S.C.) District One, where he was principal of Moore Middle School and Greenwood Elementary School. Before coming to Florence, he was principal of Lamar (S.C.) Elementary School and a teacher in Alamance County, N.C. While he was an educator, he participated in various professional organizations. As an ordained minister, he pastored in Liberty and Mebane, N.C. In Florence, he attended Highland Park United Methodist Church, where he had been a choir member and teacher of the Wesley Sunday School class.
    Surviving is his wife, Allene Wyrick DeWeese of the home; sons, David DeWeese of Bennettsville, S.C. and Duane DeWeese and his wife, Lauren, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; grandchildren; Steven and Ashley of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; a brother, Marrion (Betty) DeWeese of Graham, N.C.; two nieces; and one nephew.
    Memorials may be made to Highland Park United Methodist Church, 1300 Second Loop Road, Florence, S.C. 29505; James B. Edwards Elementary School, c/o Pre-School Intervention Class, 855 Von Kolnitz Road, Mt. Pleasant, S.C. 29464; First United Methodist Church of Bennettsville Building Fund, Bennettsville, S.C.; Florence County Christian Learning Center, P.O. Box 13071, Florence, S.C. 29504 or to a charity of one’s choice.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2007, in Highland Park United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
