Grace Zimmerman Childress MEBANE — Grace Zimmerman Childress, age 95, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 28, 2015. She was a native of Alamance County and the wife of the late John Hasten Childress.
Grace retired from Holt Hosiery. She was the oldest living member of Zion Christian Church where she served as secretary for many years. Maw-Maw Grace enjoyed sewing, making quilts and was known for her coconut cakes. She was “the lead” in making many Brunswick stews at the church. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Survivors include her daughter, Jeannie Phillippie and husband, Donald of Mebane; grandsons, Michael Brandon Phillippie and wife, Courtney of Snow Camp, Bryan Devin Phillippie and wife, Christi of Wendell; great-grandsons, Luke, Sam and Cody Phillippie and her great-granddaughter, Sage Bennett; brother, Jack Zimmerman and wife, Mary Lou of Greensboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, David Elgavan Zimmerman and Fannie Bell Pritchett Zimmerman and numerous brothers and sisters.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields for their kind and compassionate care of Gracie.
A service to celebrate her life will be held on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Stu Johnston and assisted by Gordon Phillips and burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter.
