Mrs. Hilda Kingsland Gilliam


    BURLINGTON — Mrs. Hilda Kingsland Gilliam, 83, of 2509 Saddle Club Road, passed away at 8 p.m., Saturday, June 11, 2011, at the Hospice Home.
    A native of Alamance County, Mrs. Gilliam was the wife of the late John Jacob Gilliam Sr. and daughter of the late Jesse Madison Kingsland and Beulah Bennett Kingsland. She and her husband, John Sr., owned and operated Tires and Treads until their retirement, when sons John Jr. and Jesse became owners. After graduating from Burlington High School, she attended Lenoir-Rhyne University and was a member of Macedonia Lutheran Church. She volunteered with the Williams High School Band with fundraisers as well as school and community activities. She was a member of Burlington Women’s Club and the Early American Garden Club.
    Surviving are two sons, John J. Gilliam Jr. and wife Cindy, of Elon, and Jesse Kingsland Gilliam, of Burlington; three grandchildren, Jacob Gilliam, Ally Gilliam and Holly Sue Gilliam; a sister, Louise Dodson; two nephews, Robert D. Bevan and Richard Sharpe; and one niece, Becky Pardue. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Helen Kingsland Bevan.
    Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 14, at Pine Hill Cemetery.
    The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday and other times at the residence of John and Cindy Gilliam, 1305 Tudor Ct., Elon, NC 27244. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite organization or charity.
