Robert David Gilliam

Mr. Robert David Gilliam, 87, of 3473 Forestdale Drive, Burlington died at Alamance Regional Medical Center on Friday, August 30, 2013 at 8:07 a.m.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of John Wesley Gilliam, Jr. and Mary Blanch Idol Gilliam, both deceased. He attended Altamahaw-Ossipee High School until September, 1944 at age 19. Robert was drafted into the Navy during World War II. He was sent to Bainbridge, MD for basic training. Then he moved to Newport, RI and later on to Boston, MA where he was put on the Robert L. Wilson Destroyer. From there the group was sent to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After a short stay, he was sent to Fort Jackson, SC where he was discharged on September 19, 1945. In 1950, he was again drafted into Military Service and put into the Army. He was sent to Fort Bragg, NC for Basic Training and then sent to Bremerhaven, Germany in the Engineering Department for building bridges. Later on, he moved to Mannheim, Germany for training (14 months) then, he was sent back to Bremerhaven, Germany aboard a ship to Fort Jackson, SC for discharge. During his training in Germany, he took vacation time to visit Brussels, Belgium, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam in Holland. He returned home in 1953 and spent the next 26 years with Western Electric and retired in July, 1981.
Survivors include his brothers and sisters, Bess G. Davenport, Theron I. Gilliam and wife Sybie, Charles G. Gilliam and wife Ann, William R. Gilliam and wife Polly and Sara Gilliam.
He was preceded in death by his brothers and a sister, Junius W. Gilliam, Frederick K. Gilliam John J. Gilliam and Naomi Sadler.
A private service will be held at a later date.
