David Christopher Turner


    DURHAM — David Christopher Turner, 25, formerly of Collinsville,Va., died Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the Duke Hospice Inpatient Care Facility after a courageous battle with lymphoma, stage IV. He was born June 29, 1983, in Martinsville to Walter Lee "Walt" Turner, of Charlotte, and Suzanne Thompson Turner, of Durham.
    David graduated from Fieldale-Collinsville High School, where he was a member of the award-winning marching band,wasastandoutcenterfor the Cavalier basketball team and a member of the chess club. He attended Longwood University and Christopher Newport University, where he played basketball. Until David became ill, he worked as an assistant manager of Ninth Street Surf Shop in Newport News and had planned on completing his education, majoring in sociology.
    David was a member of the FirstBaptistChurchinCollinsville, where he was a member of the youth group and participated in several mission trips. During the past year, while facing great adversity, David’s positive attitude and strength, along with his frequent use of humor, impacted the lives of many people.
    David was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elsie S. Turner, who also died with lymphoma, A.G. Thompson Sr. and Grace A. Thompson.
Other than his parents, he is survived by a brother, Andrew Ryan Turner, and sister-in-law, Ashlee Bradshaw Turner, of Bassett, Va.; his grandfather, Walter Daniel Turner, of Bassett; and his cat, Grace.
    The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Tuesday evening, June 9, 2009, at the First Baptist Church, 3339 Virginia Ave., Collinsville, Va. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, with burial to follow in Roselawn Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions be made to the David Turner Lymphoma Foundation, 223 Millspring Drive, Durham, N.C. 27005 or online at www.bigdavesbiggift.org.
