Winford Jennings Berry, Jr., 94, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 9, 2023.

He was born on May 25, 1929 in Venice, CA to the late Winford Jennings Berry, Sr. and Mabel Macena Pennington Berry, and was the husband of 72 years to Lydia Iseley Berry who survives.

Jennings was a graduate of Elon College and UNC-Chapel Hill, he served Elon College as a faculty member and administrative staff member for thirty-seven years. In addition to teaching, his administrative duties included serving several years each as Registrar, Dean of Students, and Director of Academic Advising. After retirement he was appointed as Associate Professor Emeritus of English. In 1998 Jennings was awarded the Elon Medallion for meritorious service.

He had served two terms as an Alderman in the Town of Elon, former chairman of the Western Alamance High School and Alamance County School Advisory Councils. Jennings was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving honorably during the Korean War; he attended Berea Christian Church, where he was a choir member and a former Sunday School teacher for twenty years. Jennings enjoyed and loved music so much that he joined the Elon College-Community Orchestra for three years. He took great pleasure in photography, storytelling, woodworking, and traveling throughout the United States and Canada.

Survivors other than his wife, Lydia Berry include his daughter, Pamela Aldridge and husband Ken; a son, J. Warren Berry and wife Freda Kuhfahl; grandsons, Jennings W. (Laura) Berry, Joseph L. Berry, James K. (Kristie) Aldridge and Jon Michael (Jennifer Chi) Aldridge; great grandchildren, Katie Aldridge, Fletcher Aldridge, Matthew Jennings Berry and Mackenzie Berry; a brother, Phillip Glen Berry; and several nieces and nephews.

Jennings was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James Richard Berry; an infant brother, Randall Berry; and much beloved sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Thursday, July 13, 2023 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Jeff Smith and Dr. Milton Reimer. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 1:45pm prior to the service. There will be a private graveside service at Magnolia Cemetery.
