APRIL 21, 1930 ~ FEBRUARY 19, 2019 (AGE 88)
Burlington-Darrell Gene “Chief” Small, 88, went home to be with the lord on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at the Homeplace surrounded by his family. He was a native of Alamance County and the husband of 65 years to the late Margaret Elizabeth Allen Small.
Darrell retired after 40 years with the Burlington Fire Department and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elon. He was a graduate of the 1949 class of Burlington High School where he earned All-American Football honors. He was also an avid Duke fan and an accomplished Golden Glove Boxer with an impressive 62-1 record. Darrell was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Survivors include his sons, Steve Small and wife, Angela, Tim Small and his wife, Christal and Chris Small and wife, Dottie; daughter, Julie Bray; grandchildren, Terri Britt and husband, Steve, Russ Bray, Adam Bray, Nate Small and Jack Small and a great granddaughter, Gracie Britt;. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, Howard Taft Small and Rosa Self Hayes; brother, Bennie Small and brother-in-law, Dr. Don Allen.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00am on Friday, February 22, 2019 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Randy Hobbs with the burial to follow at Pine Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Thursday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at his residence.

BURLINGTON - Margaret Elizabeth Allen Small, 84, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2015, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, surrounded by her family after four weeks of failing health.
She was born in Alamance County to the late William Arthur "Jack" Allen and the late Gena Verna Davis Allen and was the wife of Darrell Gene "Chief" Small for 65 years, who survives.
Margaret was a former employee with WBAG, Process Technology and Keck Construction. She enjoyed working on crossword puzzles and writing to her pen pal, Tia Carolan from Carrickmacrass, Ireland for over 20 years. Margaret was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elon. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend to many.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include her 3 sons, daughter, five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a brother,
She was preceded in death by her parents.
The funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 3, 2015, in the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Keith Sexton with burial to follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2015, at the funeral home and at other times at the home. [27339]
