Ross Lee Smith
May 21, 1918 ~ March 15, 2020 (age 101)


Mr. Ross Lee Smith, age 101, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2020 at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
     A native of Alamance County he was the son of the late Terry Mack Smith and the late Nettie Lee Smith and was married for over 55 years to Mrs. Dorothy Holt Smith, who passed away in 2003.  Ross earned the rank of Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served during WWII in the Pacific theatre.  He retired from the Alamance County School after serving as a teacher for over 30 years.  He was a longtime member of Bethel Methodist Church where he served in the Methodist Men of the Church and held several church offices over the years.
     Mr. Smith is survived by his son, James Lee Smith and his wife, Gloria, of Burlington; two grandchildren, Sarah Smith and Kim (Tiffany) Helton; two step grandchildren, John (Lisa) Madren and Michael (Lindsay) Madren; two great grandchildren, Dalton Jones and Kyra Jones; three step great grandchildren, Jordan Madren, Courtney Madren and Aaron Madren; a brother, Luther (Brenda) Smith of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; three sisters, Margaret Todd, Betsy Albright and Mary Jane Pettigrew; and five brothers, Allen Smith, J.C. Smith, Mack Smith Ross, Dan Smith and L.D. “Pete” Smith.
     Mr. Smith family will be holding private services

     The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the first responders and the nurses of the first floor of ARMC for their special care of Mr. Smith during his illness.
