Betty Gwendolyn Bare Smith
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Betty Gwendolyn Bare Smith, 66, of 505 Baldwin Road, Burlington, died at the Hospice Home in Burlington on Thursday, October 2, 2008, at 7:15 p.m. following a lengthy battle with cancer.
She was born April 1, 1942, in Alamance County, N.C., to Roland Vernell "Sally" Bare, deceased, and Glenna Teer Smith, who survives. She was later adopted by the late Lenwood Perkins Smith Sr. She was the stepdaughter of the late Sara B. Wells. She was preceded in death by her husband, Talmadge Smith. She was a licensed practical nurse for 25 years until 1989 and retired from the sample department at Burlington Industries. She was a member of Davis Street United Methodist Church.
In addition to her mother of Burlington, survivors include seven siblings, Dr. Lenwood Perkins Smith Jr. of Columbia, S.C., Thomas Ted Smith of Durham, William Vernell "Bud" Bare of Beaufort, N.C., Emily Sue Bare of Burlington, Fay B. Summers of Elon, Roland Frank Bare and Talmadge Lee Bare, both of Graham; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Sunday, October 5, 2008, at 4 p.m. by Dr. Alan Sasser. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery in Galax, Va., at a later date.
The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Sunday from 3 until 4 p.m. prior to the service, and at other times they will be at the residence of her mother, 2423 Edgewood Avenue, Burlington, N.C.
