Mrs. Olivia "Lib" Summers Downs, 78, died on Thursday, March 27, 2008, at Blumenthal Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation, with her daughter and son-in-law by her side.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 31, in the Chapel of First Baptist Church. The Rev. Steve Pressley will officiate. Inurnment in the church columbarium will follow the service.
Olivia was born on May 10, 1929, in Rural Hall, N.C., to the late Vannie C. Summers and Hallie M .Summers. She graduated from Bessemer High School in 1946. On August 10, 1946, she married the love of her life, Alvis Christian Downs, who preceded her in death in February 2004. She retired from Bales and Truitt Co. in 1993 after 23 years of service as their bookkeeper. She loved the beach and working in her yard on Surry Drive, but the greatest joy in her life was having her extended family gathered around her table to enjoy fellowship and a delicious meal. She had a very generous heart and was always doing things for other people. She had been a member of First Baptist Church for over 50 years.
In addition to her husband, he was preceded in death by her sisters, Rachel McGee and Ruth Ball and brothers, Coleman Summers and Lacy Summers.
Olivia is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Sheffey and husband, Steve of Greensboro; her son, Randy O. Downs, Sr. of Covington, Ga.; grandchildren, Randy O. Downs, Jr. and Michelle Slater, both of Covington, Ga.; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Her daughter would like to thank the dedicated staff at Blumenthal's for the love, kindness and compassion that was shown to Olivia over the past 3 ½ years. Olivia's room was filled with love all day on Thursday, March 27, before her death Thursday night. Her daughter will also be eternally grateful to Hospice for allowing her mother to die with peace and dignity.
