William “Bill” Christler Smith
REIDSVILLE — William “Bill” Christler Smith, 80, of 1401 Wentworth Street, passed away Sunday, February 14, 2010 at Annie Penn Hospital.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel.
William Smith was born and lived the majority of his life in Rockingham County from the age of 12. Prior to that he lived in Danbury, N.C. with his grandmother, until his mother moved her mother and the other children to Reidsville, N.C. He worked as an adjuster for Lorillard Tobacco Co. from April 1957 until April 1991 when he retired with 34 years of service.
Bill loved the ocean and enjoyed fishing and flounder gigging. He liked working in the outdoors and around the yard and lake. He also had several businessrs of his own, such as a truck stop café and a nightclub on Hwy 29 N called the “Out A Ways”. Bill was considered a man’s man, and never met a person that didn’t like him.
Bill was preceded in death by his grandmother, Elizabeth Smith Sawyers; his mother, Mary Lucy Smith; his daughters, Deborah Carol Smith and Tara Jernigan Hutchens; his ex-wife, Hazel Southard Smith; uncles, Raymond Sawyers and Orange Sawyers.
He is survived by his wife,Teresa Tolley Smith, of the home; sons, William “Corkey” Smith and wifeWanda;William Jernigan and wife Brittany; Robert Darrell Jernigan and fiancée Kim Hendrix and Thomas Wyatt Hutchens; daughter, Kay Smith Simpson and husband Nathan, all of Reidsville; grandchildren, Lisa Zimmerman, Corey Manley, Bryan Smith and wife Kellie, Suzanne Simpson, Christler Hutchens, Janet Faye Hutchens, Madison Lee Jernigan, William “Randy” Jernigan, Amy DeLancey.
He is also survived by greatgrandchildren, Melaine and Danielle Zimmerman, Cherri Smith, and Takara Joy White; and one great-great-grandchild, Daniel “Danny” Zimmerman; aunt, Ruth Sawyers Durham; sisters and brothersin-law, Dorothy Boaz of Ruffin, Marion Delores Somers of Lansing, N.C., Faye Lillian Burris of Florida, Andrew Tolley of South Carolina, and Marcine “Marci” Tolley-Berkhimer of Tennessee.
The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home on February 19 from 7 until 9 p.m. and at other times at the residence.
