Obituary Online notes for “Tinker” Walter Sneed THOMPSON
Walker S. "Tinker" Thompson, DVM passed away Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Woodland Park Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. Dr. Thompson was born on March 31, 1929 in Danville, VA and was the son of the late Wiley Otis and Laura Sneed Thompson. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Dr. Thompson attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) and received his veterinary degree from the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine, in 1955.
Following a short period in a mixed animal practice, he worked for the Animal Health Division of USDA in Rocky Mount and Burlington, NC. In 1961 he was transferred to Harrisonburg to assist in eradicating diseases affecting chickens and turkeys. In 1968, Dr. Thompson left government service to work in technical service and animal health product evaluation for the Hess and Clark Division of Richardson Merrell Company in Ashland, Ohio.
Dr. Thompson returned to Harrisonburg in 1972 to work for Wampler Foods. While employed with Wampler Foods, he served on the Mid-Atlantic Poultry Health Council, and as President of the Virginia Poultry Federation. Following retirement from Wampler Foods in 1994, Dr. Thompson worked part time for Nicholas Turkey Breeding Farms, Sonoma, CA as their east coast representative. Dr. Thompson was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Harrisonburg Lions Club, and the Harrisonburg Elks Lodge #450.
On June 30, 1951, he married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Elizabeth Adams, who preceded him in death on January 26, 2013.
He is survived by his daughter, Damarius Marion and husband, John Williams of Williamsburg, VA; and two sons, Forrest W. Thompson of Lexington, VA and Thomas L. Thompson and wife, Allison, of Harrisonburg. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Whitney Thompson of Norristown, PA, Katherine T. Cale of Carrsville, VA, Sarah F. Thompson of Dayton, VA, Walker N. and Jane E. Thompson of Harrisonburg, VA; great-granddaughter, Madison F. Parker of Dayton; and a great-grandson, Jerry Michael Cale, III "Tripp", of Carrsville, VA.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 23, 2015 from 6-8:00 pm at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 24, 2015 at Asbury United Methodist Church with Rev. James M. John and Pastor Bob Talbott officiating. Burial will be private.
