Ola Pierce Barbour
ELON — Mrs. Ola Pierce Barbour, 90, of Prince Edward Drive, Elon, died at the Hospice Home in Burlington on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 5:20 p.m. following several months of failing health and three weeks critical illness.
Maw-Maw Barbour, as the grandchildren called her, truly delighted in her family and friends. Although her physical health was declining, she continued to reach out to all of her loved ones. A day did not go by in which she was not talking on the phone to a sister, brother, niece, grandchild, daughter, or friend.
She showed her love in many ways. Whether it was calling and singing “Happy Birthday” or giving a surprise coconut cake, she was always thinking of others.
Known for her strong will and determination, she lived independently until the age of 90. As an example, she first learned to drive when in her 50s. The love of her life, “Jimmy,” passed on in 1988. For 22 years she navigated life without her best friend and remained self-sufficient.
A native of Bertie County, N.C., she was the wife of the late James William “Jimmy” Barbour and the daughter of the Rev. Loy Van Pierce and Annie Lyon Pierce, both deceased. She retired from Belk’s and was a member of People’s Memorial Christian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Ann Conner Stanley and husband Roger of Greensboro and Glenda Barbour Bailey and husband Raymond of Elon; four grandchildren, Dawn Benbow and husband Steve of Greensboro, Blair Stanley of New York City, N.Y., Ray Bailey Jr. and wife Laura of Gibsonville and Rodney Bailey and wife Mala of Burlington; five greatgrandchildren, Hunt Bailey and Caroline Bailey, both of Gibsonville, Aanya Bailey of Burlington, Michael Benbow and Brandon Benbow, both of Greensboro; two sisters, Lewella P. Kelly and husband Rod of Roanoke Rapids and Rose P. Stone and husband Reginald of Dunn; and one brother, Steve Pierce and wife Mary Lou of Kernersville.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Chad Pierce and Raleigh Pierce.
The funeral service will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Ben Bishop, the Rev. Howard Thompson and the Rev. Reginald Stone. Burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m., prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice League, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215.
Words cannot fully express our sincere thanks and gratitude for the loving care extended to Ola and her family throughout her life. We offer our heartfelt thanks to all family and friends. We especially appreciate the daily phone calls from her niece Sandra and the loving care extended by her neighbors, the Jordan’s and Nina Kimball. A special thanks to the tireless caregivers of Liberty Commons and Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell during her final days.
