Sara Jo Kruchten
Sara Jo Garrison Kruchten, age 80, of Mechanicsville, Va., passed away Friday, Sept. 14, 2012.
A native of Burlington, she was a retired employee of AT&T, now Lucent Technologies. Jo was very active in the Telephone Pioneers of America. She was the first president of the James River Council. In 2005, she received the Group Pacesetter Award for the New Outlook, Virginia Council of Pioneers. In 2011, she was a finalist in the National Council of Telephone Pioneers of America, Lifetime Achievement Award for her volunteer work. She was especially honored when the New Outlook Council renamed their program for distributing books to disadvantaged children to the Jo Kruchten Motivation to Read program.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Holt and Norma Marie Garrison, and her brother, W. Norman Garrison.
She is survived by her daughter, Norma Carol Marrin, and her husband, Bernard; her two granddaughters, whom she loved dearly, Sara Marrin of Richmond, Va., and Barbara Marrin and her husband Jon Ciccone, of Arlington, Va.; her sister, Lucille Wilson, and her husband Don of Fletcher; her brother, John Garrison, and his wife, Kathy, and her sister-in-law, Barbara Garrison, all of Burlington. She is also survived by her nephews and nieces, Rodney Garrison (Andrea) and Susan Harris (Shannon), of Burlington, Mark Garrison, of Raleigh, and Donna Earley (Lee) of Fremont, Calif. In addition, she was very proud of her great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Bliley’s Funeral Home, Staples Mill. Graveside services will be held at Union Ridge Church in Burlington on Monday at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the charity of your choice. 3, Sara Jo Garrison Kruchten
