Sybil Huffman, 93, a longtime resident of Burlington, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, at Adams Farm Living & Rehab in Jamestown. Until moving a few weeks ago, Sybil had for two years been a resident of Blakey Hall Retirement Community in Elon.
Sybil was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and friend to many. She will be missed.
Sybil’s husband, Dick Huffman, died in 2003. They were married for 49 years, their union resulting in a large family, including four sons - Jim (Amy), Steve (Meg), Ron (Myra) and Eddie - 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Grandchildren include Matt (Kelly), Katie (Dustin), Rachel (Josh), Alex (John), Zachary (Rachel), Will, Ron Jr. (Carrie), Tyler (Eduardo), Kyle, Grant, Rhett and Sam.
Sybil also had many beloved nieces and nephews.
Sybil was born May 13, 1933, to William Pinkney Walker and Vera Shealey Walker. She was the youngest of six children and the last surviving child, preceded in death by siblings Evelyn, Virginia, William, Jack and Eula Jean.
Sybil was born in Lowell, N.C. By the time she was 5, her family had moved a number of times between South Carolina and Virginia, prompting Sybil in later life to say, “It’s a wonder I knew where to lay my little head.”
The family eventually settled on Peele Street in Burlington where her father was manager of the weaving department at nearby Plaid Mills. Sybil lived on Peele Street until she married. She attended Burlington High School, graduating in 1951, her class the first to graduate in the auditorium at Williams HIgh School. Sybil attended Elon College for two years before marrying. She and Dick lived for two years in Tampa, Fla., while he finished his enlistment in the Air Force, then returned to Burlington.
Sybil was a stay-at-home mother as her family grew, then worked as a substitute teacher and teacher’s aide before becoming a secretary at Broadview Middle School, a position she held for years. She was a lifetime member of Northside Baptist Church where she served in a variety of capacities.
Sybil was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor, probably important in keeping her sanity as the only female in a house of males. Among her many talents was the ability to juggle (oranges, apples, you name it) and the organizer of her family’s annual vacation camping trips. Sybil also had a lifetime love of animals. When she was young, wild birds trusted her enough to eat out of her hand. Sybil’s mother, Vera, used to laugh about seeing Sybil coax stray dogs to their house, then begging to keep the animal, pleading she had tried her best to chase it away.
Sybil loved reading (a love she passed to all her sons) and traveling. She also enjoyed babysitting, a task she was much in demand for for many years, both to her own children and many others.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Burlington. The service will be preceded by visitation with the family from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Burial will be at noon Monday at Alamance Memorial Park.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Blakey Hall Retirement Community for their care and concern for Sybil over the past two years.
