Chester Lee Phillips


HUDSON, NC - Sergeant First Class Chester Lee Phillips (Retired US Army), age 78, of Hudson, passed away on Tuesday, November 7th, 2017 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Carter and Millie Byrd Phillips. He is also preceded in death by nine siblings. Chester retired from the US Army after 21 years of service. He bravely served his country with the United States Army Special Forces, as a Green Beret, completing two tours in the Vietnam War. Chester was a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal, as well as several more medals and ribbons. He will be remembered as a proud Veteran who loved the Army and his country. Chester's hobbies included flowers, growing things and traveling.
Surviving is his sisters: Vola Stewart and Virginia "Ginny" Murrell both of Gibsonville and brother, Edward Phillips of Bakersville. Several sisters-inlaw as well as numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 15th in Salisbury National Cemetery. Rev. Donnie Phillips will officiate.
