Ira James “I.J.” Coleman Jr.
BURLINGTON — Mr. Ira James “I.J.” Coleman Jr., 79, of 4704 N.C. 62 North, died Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at the Hospice Home in Burlington.
A native of Alamance County, Mr. Coleman was the husband of Betty Jean Smith Coleman, who survives, and the son of the late Ira James Coleman Sr. and the late Mary Ruth Carden Coleman.
Mr. Coleman was employed by Johnston Oil Company for 20 years. He and his wife, Betty Jean, owned and operated Pleasant Grove Grocery for 22 years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict and was a member of American Legion Post 427 for 54 years.
Mr. Coleman loved his vegetable garden and especially making tomato juice. Recently, his driving abilities faded and he was limited to driving his golf cart.
In addition to his wife, Betty Jean, of the home, Mr. Coleman is survived by his daughter, Hope C. Alvis and her husband, Neil, of Burlington; his sons, Ira James “Jay” Coleman III and his wife, Stacey of Burlington, George Anthony “Tony” Coleman and his wife, Trudy, of Mebane; six grandchildren, Whitney Nelson, Hillary Coleman, Katie Coleman, Ira James Coleman IV, Hayden Alvis and Jonathan Alvis and one great-grandson, Cameron Nelson; two sisters, Becky Coleman Forbis of Southern Pines, Maxine Coleman Hinton and her husband, Leon, of Burlington and many special nephews and a special niece.
The family will receive friends at Rich and Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington, Saturday, July 23, from 1 until 2:30 p.m. At other times they will be at the residence.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, at 3 p.m., in the Rich and Thompson Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Walter Jones. Burial will follow in Mc-Cray Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
