Robert H. Thompson, Jr., 83, left his earthly home for his heavenly home on Monday, August 19, 2013.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, August 22, at 11:00 a.m. at Palm Street Christian Church with interment following at Lakeview Memorial Park.

Family visitation will be at Forbis & Dick Funeral Home on N. Elm Street on Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00.

Robert grew up and was baptized at Stevens Memorial Baptist Church and then faithfully attended Palm St. Christian Church for the past 60 years. He served as a church usher and was treasurer of the Crusaders Sunday School Class.

Robert ("Slow") graduated from Rankin High School. He played basketball and was the pitcher on the baseball team that won the County baseball championship his senior year. He entered a semi-professional baseball career out of high school playing in the Blue Ridge League and Sally League before being drafted to the U.S. Army. He served in the Korean War, receiving the Purple Heart medal. He was employed by Sears & Roebuck Mailorder Catalog Plant for 37 years, retiring in 1990. Robert was a loving and devout family man, avid sports fan, and enjoyed playing golf.

Robert is survived by his wife of 59 years, Louise Brady Thompson; daughters: Teresa Beasley (Jerry) of Browns Summit; Karen Mabe (Randy) of Reidsville; son, Keith Thompson of Liberty. Grandchildren: Michael Beasley (Karlie) of Raleigh; Laura Beasley (Greensboro); Taylor Thompson (Liberty). Great grandchildren: Maddie and Tade Beasley (Raleigh). Sister: Lillian Brady; Brother: Richard Thompson (Gail), and numerous nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Hoke and Viola Thompson; and brother, Jake Thompson.
