Jane Wood Hyder, 94, died peacefully at NHC Healthcare on Jan. 31, 2011.
She had lived in Bristol since 1928 when her family moved from New Jersey. As a young teenager, Jane began singing in the choir at First Presbyterian Church and continued for decades until her health declined. She graduated from Sullins College, King College and Westminister Choir College and later received her masters degree from East Tennessee State University. When World War II erupted Jane volunteered for overseas duty in the American Red Cross and served several years with Allied Forces in the European Theater. After the war, she was music director at several churches, including Central Presbyterian in Bristol. For many years she taught elementary grades and reading in the Bristol Tennessee City Schools and served as an adjunct professor of education at King College.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Henry Clinton Wood III; and her sisters, Katherine Wood Mason and Lucy Wood Gilmer.
Survivors include her sons, Jack W. Hyder Jr. and wife Emily of Bristol, and Michael W. Hyder of Charlottesville, Va., and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2, in the parlor at First Presbyterian Church in Bristol followed by a celebration of her life and resurrection at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Dr. Gordon Turnbull will officiate. At Mrs. Hyder's request, she will be cremated.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 701 Florida Ave., Bristol, TN 37620; or to a charity of choice.
