Eleanor Chappell
   CANDOR — Mrs. Eleanor Fitzgerald Chappell, 90, of River Landing at Sandy Ridge in High Point, formerly of Candor, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2011, at High Point Regional Hospital.

   She was born January 3, 1921, in Lillington, daughter of the late Robert and Myrtle Bruton Fitzgerald. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 1993 by her husband of 52 years, Robert Melvin Chappell, and two brothers: Bob Fitzgerald and Bruton Fitzgerald.

   She is survived by her three daughters: Anne (Bill) Harris of High Point, Gay (Al) Trotter of Burlington, and Eleanor (David) Goss of Durham. Her surviving brother is Paul (Fay) Fitzgerald of Hixson, Tenn.

   Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Andy (Kelly) Harris of Morehead City, Charles (Allison) Harris of Southern Pines, Mark (Anna) Harris of Southern Pines, Dr. Adam Trotter of Chapel Hill, Robert Trotter (Gina Hodges) of Matthews, Rebecca (John) Clay of Greensboro and Daniel Goss of Durham. She is also survived by seven greatgrandchildren.

   Mrs. Chappell attended schools in Greenville before her family moved to Candor to be near the Bruton family. She graduated from Candor High School before graduating from Greensboro College in 1941 with a degree in music education.

   Soon after graduation, she married her high school sweetheart,

   Robert Chappell. The pastor of Candor Methodist

   Church then asked her to organize a choir, and she volunteered her service as organist and choir director for more than 60 years.

   Together, the Chappells started Sandy Ridge Farms and produced cotton, tobacco, and peaches.

   The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Briggs Candor Funeral Home, 187 Farmers’ Market Road in Candor.

   The Service of Death and Resurrection will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Candor United Methodist Church on South Main Street in Candor conducted by the Rev. Pat Sykes. Burial will follow at the Town of Candor Cemetery.
