DANVILLE, Va. - Nellie Mays Marshall, age 97, formerly of 13 Still Street, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health since suffering a stroke in April 1991.
Born January 4, 1908, in Guilford County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Cyrus Ruffin Mays and Elsie Barker Mays.
Mrs. Marshall lived most of her life in Danville. She had been employed at Dan River, Inc., and was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church.
Nellie was a devoted Christian, mother, grandmother and friend. She loved life, was filled with laughter and enjoyed good times with her family. She was warm and caring, always lived a life above reproach.
She waits for us....
She was married to Homer Welcher Marshall who died January 1957.
She is survived by two sons, Homer Leon Marshall of Danville and Jerry Eugene Marshall Sr. of Ringgold; three sisters, Vella Marshall, Pearl Perrow and Minnie Bond, all of Danville; and four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was also predeceased by three sisters, Georgia Smith, Dorothy Saul and Lucille Cooper; and a great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce, the Rev. Gilmer Setliff and the Rev. Wayne Wallace officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home of Jerry Marshall, 244 Davis Dr., Ringgold, and at the home of Homer Leon Marshall, 335 Taylor Street, Danville.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
