May Craigge Jones Kernodle
ELON - May Craigge Jones Kernodle of 2 Poplar, Elon, died on Nov. 21, 2011 after an illness of several months. She was born Sept. 13, 1924 in Arcadia, Florida. She was the daughter of Thomas Hawkins Jones Sr. and Corabel Kenney Jones and the wife of Dr. George Wallace Kernodle, of the home.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Hawkins Jones Jr.; and one sister Elizabeth Jones Younkman Hargrave.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three loving sons, George Wallace Kernodle Jr., MD and wife Laura Franklin Kernodle of Burlington, Douglas Stuart Kernodle, MD and wife Sherry Swindle Kernodle of Nashville, Tennessee, Richard Neil Kernodle and wife Paulette Wooten Kernodle of Burlington; a daughter, Elizabeth Craigge Kernodle Hussey, Pharm.D., and husband Harold Bradley Hussey of Chapel Hill; and 10 grandchildren, Elizabeth and husband, Justin Kohns, George, Margaret, Carolyn, Rachel, Mary, Lindsey, Rebecca Kernodle, and William and Sarah Hussey.
Mrs. Kernodle lived in Florida during her youth, and graduated from The Montverde School, Montverde, Florida, where she was valedictorian of her graduating class. She attended Georgetown College, Georgetown, Kentucky for two years, the alma mater of both of her parents. She then entered Duke University Nursing School and earned RN and BSN degrees in 1946. She was a member of Santa Filamina Honor Society and later inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
After graduation, she was head nurse in charge of premature, newborn and isolated nurseries at Duke Hospital until her marriage to Dr. Wallace Kernodle. They were married in the First Presbyterian Church in Sarasota, Florida on Dec. 28, 1947 and established residence in Burlington where Wallace had recently begun practice in pediatrics. Mrs. Kernodle assisted as nurse in the practice until their first son was born in 1951. Her life-long interests included golf, tennis and music. Mrs. Kernodle was a member at The First Presbyterian Church in Burlington, and actively involved with the women of the church and teaching Sunday school and volunteered at the Child Development Center.
Visitation will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011 followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery. In addition to the church visitation, the family will be at the residence at other times.
