 BURLINGTON - Dr. Donald Reed Kernodle, 88, on October 22nd, 2016 left this world gracefully as he lived.
 
 He was born in 1928 in Ossipee, NC to Dr. Charles Edward Kernodle and Bertha Barker Kernodle, deceased.
 
 He was preceded in death by sister Mary Winifred Kernodle, and brothers, Dr. Harold Barker Kernodle, Dr. George Wallace Kernodle and Dr. Dwight Talmage Kernodle.
 
 Dr. Kernodle graduated from Altamahaw-Ossipee High School in 1945, Elon College in 1949, and Duke University Medical School in 1953.
 
 He completed the residencies at Duke University Hospital in both Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology.
 
 He was a Captain in the United States Air Force, serving as a flight surgeon in England for two years.
 
 He practiced at the Kernodle Clinic for 32 years until his retirement in 1991.
 
 Left to lovingly cherish his memory are his wife, Lucy Wilson Kernodle of 57 years, along with four sons and one daughter; Donald Reed Kernodle, Jr. (Maureen), of Marietta, GA, John Charles Kernodle (Sarah) of Charlotte, NC, Robert Davis Kernodle (Christiana) of Burlington, NC, William Gray Kernodle (Anne) of Charlotte, NC and Lucy Kernodle West (Ed) of Wilmington, NC.
 
 He is also survived by nine grandsons, William, Jake, Donald II, John Ange, Davis, George, Edwin IV, John Hewlett and Elijah and four granddaughters: Campbell, Morgan, Maggie and Lucy.
 
 He is also survived by sister, Becky Kernodle Dodson and brother, Dr. Charles Edward Kernodle, Jr. along with many nieces and nephews.
 
 Visitation will be held at Rich and Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Wednesday, October 26th, 2016 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
 
 A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
 
 In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Kid’s Path “Children’s Christmas Fund” at Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215, or a charity of choice.
