Fred and Hattie Bess were married February 15, 1918. They had four children, Annie Evelyn (died at birth), Charles Edwin, Elbert Earl and Mary Mildred. He was an auto machanic in Tryon, NC, Landrum, SC and Spartanburg SC. He lived in Campobello, SC ( 280 Lude Johnson Blvd.)until his children were grown and then moved to Spartanburg, SC (186 Pearl St.). He worked hard and managed to send all of his children to college. His eldest son Edwin became a University President.
