Craig Dallas “Dobby” May
ELON — Craig Dallas “Dobby” May, 92, passed away on Jan. 27 at Hospice Home of Alamance County. Dobby was a native of Alamance County and the husband of Betty Swink May for 40 years and the son of Commie L. and Mable Craig May, both deceased.
After high school, Dobby spent a few months working in Washington, D.C. He joined the “Army Air Corps” in 1942. He went to Air Gunner School, Armament School, Pilot Training School and ended up as a bombardier. After World War II ended, he served as a Tactical Training Officer at Lackland Basic Training in San Antonio, Texas. He was discharged in 1946. He was a former member of The Burlington Civil Air Patrol, the Graham Rotary Club, Graham Jaycees, Graham Toastmasters Club and the Gideon’s. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Graham, a member of both the Chancel and Senior Choirs. He also served as Chairman of the Official Board, Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher and Youth Counselor.
He was employed by Western Electric and Industrial Supply based out of Clinton, S.C. before beginning his own company, Craig Specialty Company in 1974. He sold industrial supplies until he and his wife, Betty, retired in 1990. Dobby and Betty enjoyed the mountains and spent many extended summers in their vacation home on the Watauga River in Valle Crucis, N.C. near Boone. He was proud of his service in the military and fondly enjoyed discussing those years. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed raising a big garden and sharing his produce with others. He loved the Lord and strived to live his testimony before others.
Survivors include his son, Dean Vaughn and his wife Valerie; daughter, Michele Vaughn Lowe, and her husband, Jack; a former son-inlaw, Mike Massengill; five grandchildren, Josh Massengill, Meredith Vaughn, Cameron Vaughn, Ethan Lowe and Jared Lowe; and two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Massengill and Hunter Massengill.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Shoffner May; two daughters, Jo Ellen May Massengill and infant daughter, Pamela Christine May; a brother, C.L. May and wife Ann; a sister, LaVerne May Lindley and husband “Shag”.
A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Graham on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Kevin Baker. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. prior to the memorial service in the church parlor.
