Richard Daniel “Dan” Smith
 
 GREENSBORO — Richard Daniel “Dan” Smith, 79, departed from this life on Monday, March 7, 2016, at his home.
 
 Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 11, 2016. at Newlyn Street United Methodist Church, with the Rev. George Coates officiating. Burial will follow in Westminster Gardens cemetery.
 
 Born July 12, 1936, in Alamance County, to the late Terry Mack Smith and Mary Magdalane Beckom, Dan was a member of Newlyn Street United Methodist Church where he served as an usher.
 
 He retired from the City of Greensboro as Supervisor of the Water and Sewage Department. Dan was a hard worker who enjoyed farming and he was an avid fisherman. He was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him.
 
 In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by two wives, Betty Joe Smith and Peggy Williams Smith; four brothers, Leonard D. “Pete” Smith, Allen Smith, J.C. Smith, and Mac Ross; and three sisters, Margaret Todd, Betsy Albright, and Mildred Madran.
 
 Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of seven years, Linda Davis Southard, of the home; daughters, Rosanna Smith Miro and husband Bud of Mississippi, Cyndy Hayworth and husband Richard and London Southard Cook and husband Greg, all of Greensboro; brothers, Ross Smith and Luther Smith and wife Brenda, all of Burlington; sister, Mary Jane Pettigrew of Burlington; sister-in-law, Vicki Wilson Smith, of Elon; five grandchildren, Rich Hayworth, Melissa Dawn Miro Fowler, Traci Michelle Miro Banks, William Preston Brady, and Vance Davis Brady; and two great-grandchildren, Addison Rose Fowler and Elijah Fain Fowler.
 
 The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 Thursday evening, March 10, 2016, at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm Street Chapel and at other times at the residence.
 
 In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Newlyn Street United Methodist Church, 212 E. Newlyn Street, Greensboro, NC 27408 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
