Madge Smith, 99, of Nashville, formerly of North Vernon and Columbus, died at 8:20 p.m. Saturday, January 10, 2004, at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Smith was a 1922 graduate of North Vernon High School, and a 1926 graduate of Franklin College. She had been a teacher at Clear Spring School in Brown County. She was a member of Nashville Christian Church and North Vernon First Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the Camera Club and Garden Club in Columbus.

The funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 20, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon with the Rev. Tim Bond officiating. Calling will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Monday and after 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the building funds of Nashville Christian Church or North Vernon First Baptist Church.

Born July 4, 1904, in Jennings County, she was the daughter of Frank A. and Clara B. Simmons May. She married Kenneth Smith on June 11, 1927, in Jennings County.

Surviving are a son, David J. Smith of Nashville; a daughter, Phyllis Hale of Oakland, Illinois; a sister, Bernice Showers of North Vernon; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, on April 15, 1969; a son, Lt. Richard K. Smith; a daughter, Mary Alice Yates; a brother, John May; sisters, Mabel Gorbett, Augusta Jolly and Merle Moncrief; and a grandson, Tod Yates.
