Bernard was a lifelong farmer who loved the land, he was happiest when he was on his tractor. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, where he served on the Official Board and was chairman of the Cemetery Committee. He was a charter member of the Kimesville Fire Department. He was the husband of Alice Clapp Black.
