OBITUARY
Mr. Walter Elwood Johnston, 88, of 343 Baldwin Rd., Burlington, passed away at 10:36 AM, Thursday, July 18, 2013, at White Oak Manor.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of over 67 years to Vivian Waddell Johnston, who survives, and son of the late Charlie Henry Johnston and Hattie Smith Johnston. He was a retired Lieutenant with the Burlington Police Department with 35 years of service. He was a WW II Veteran serving in the Navy as a Seabee, a charter member of Northside Baptist Church, member of the NC Retired Peace Officers Association and Bula Masonic Lodge #409 A.F. & A.M.
Surviving, other than his wife of the home, are two daughters, Mrs. Phyllis Coggins and husband Furman of Chapel Hill and Dianne Blanton and husband David of Concord, NC; a son, Steve Johnston and wife Tammy of Lynchburg, VA; six grandchildren, Ben (Stephanie) Coggins, Trent (Sarah) Coggins, Heather (Aaron) Horton, Jonathan Coggins, Laura Blanton and Joel Blanton; two great grandchildren, Dylan Coggins and Lily Grace Horton; and a brother, James Johnston of Florida.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, Fannie Byrd, Beatrice Wright, Hattie Mae Cates, Margaret Andrews and Edna Comer; and three brothers, Glenn Johnston, Henry Johnston and Gordon Johnston.
Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM, Saturday, July 20, at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington with Dr. Dale O. Steele and Rev. Howard Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2:30-4:00 PM, prior to the service and other times at the residence.
