Harold “Glenn” Walker

BURLINGTON — Harold “Glenn” Walker, 81, passed away late Sunday afternoon, Aug. 30, 2015, surrounded by his loved ones.

Glenn was born and raised in Alamance County on the land where he farmed tobacco and dairy cows, and where he and his wife, Susan Leonard Walker, raised five children.

He was a proud “Fighting Christian” of Elon College, where he played basketball and graduated with a B.A.in Mathematics in 1956. He was drafted into the United States Army shortly thereafter, where he served 16 months of his two years in the Signal Corps in Stuttgart, Germany. He was a faithful member of Union Ridge Church, giving of his time as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher, serving on the Official board, and as Chair of the Cemetery Committee. He served his community in many ways as a coach and a mentor. He supported the Alamance County Recreation Department, was member of the Civitan Club and member of the planning committee for the foundation of Cedarock Park. He loved the land he farmed and he used that as a tool to instill strong morals and values in his children. It was in these fields that they learned the importance of family. He is remembered for his fairness, loyalty, integrity, and his witty sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Robert and Pearl McKinney Walker, of Burlington.

He is survived by his wife, Susan, and the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren that he was so proud of Gary ( Laura) of Burlington, Greg ( Lisa) of Raleigh, Steve ( Denise) of Burlington, Carl of Mebane, and Vera ( Tony) of Mebane; 13 grandchildren, Jarrod (son Jackson), Steven, Kassia, Mattie Anne, Elizabeth, Erin, Graham, Will, John David, Allison, Addie, Jessica, and Olivia. He is also survived by his sisters, Martha Lapas of Kinston, Lila Patterson (Clark) of Burlington and Julia Bell (Frank) of Burlington.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday night between 6 and 8 in the Union Ridge Church fellowship hall, 115 Altamahaw-Union Ridge Road, Burlington, and at other times at the Walker residence.

The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Union Ridge Church.

Memorials may be made to the Cemetery Fund at Union Ridge Church.
