Aleene Welch Abee
GIBSONVILLE — Dorothy Aleene Welch Abee, age 86, passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2011 at the Hospice Home.

A native Guilford County, she was the wife of the late Paul Abee for 53 years and daughter of the late Roy and Mintie Whitesell Welch.

Aleene grew up in Gibsonville and graduated from Gibsonville High School in 1941. She was employed by Kayser-Roth for many years and later GE. After leaving GE, Aleene was a tireless volunteer worker for Alamance County Hospital and Alamance Memorial Hospital as a “Pink Lady” for 15 years. She visited patients with her roving gift cart, and her kind words would brighten the day of many, especially the older, lonely patients. Later her cake decorating skills were used to help the volunteer group raise over $10,000.00 in bake sales. The money was used to fund construction of the new Gift Shop to replace the carts and Aleene was put in charge of buying merchandise for the gift shop. She was recognized for donating over 10,000 hours of service.

Survivors include her daughter, Delaine Lowry and husband James of Key West, Fla.; sons, Randy Abee of Atlanta, Ga., Craig Abee of Burlington, Kyle Abee and wife Marti of Mebane; grandchildren, Ashley Abee, Toni Abee, Shane Abee and Jordan Abee; sisters, Louise Somers of Raleigh, Margaret Hicks of Pasadena, Texas, Shirley Gilliam and husband Maynard of Gibsonville and Jean Andrews of Mebane; brothers, William “Pat” Welch and wife Mary Ellen of San Leon, Texas and Carl Welch of Gibsonville.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Winfred and Arthur Welch.

The funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, September 15, 2011 at 3 p.m. in the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Larry Lamberth and a private entombment will take place at a later time in the mausoleum of Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:45 until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Home Place for their loving care and attention to their mother.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell; 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215
