OBITUARIES Mr. M. Hassell Andrews
GRAHAM — Mr. M. Hassell Andrews, 67, of 710 N. Main St., died at 8:40 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Duke University Medical Center of complications from open heart surgery.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Sandra Andrews Andrews, who survives, and the son of the late Theodore Hassell "Dan" Andrews and Walterleen Tilley Andrews. He retired as Assistant Fire Chief of the Burlington Fire Department with 37 years of service. He was the Mayor of the City of Graham, elected in November, 2003. He was a City Representative for the Piedmont Triad Council of Government, served on the City Council for eight years, and was a member of the Historical District Commission and on the Appearance Commission. He was a past Master of Bula Lodge No. 409 AF & AM, and an Amran Shrine 32 nd Degree Mason. He was a member of Eastlawn Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, trustee, and served on various church committees.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Steve H. Andrews and wife, Wendy, of Swepsonville; two daughters, Ms. Sherrie Andrews Whitesell of Weddington, N.C. and Miss Trudy Goude of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Morgan Ashley Whitesell and Lindsay Erin Whitesell; and a brother, Mr. John T. Andrews of Marion.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Alma Gray Andrews.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Graham by Dr. Terry Pritchard, Mr. Steve Joyner, and the Rev. Tommy Love. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.
The family will be at the Rich & Thompson Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and at other times at the residence.
