Mrs. Lucille “Lucy” Whitesell Isley, 93, of Burlington passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, January 13, 2024 surrounded by her children.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of 61 years to the late Max G. Isley, Sr. and the daughter of Lacy J. and Ella Whitesell, both deceased. One of six children, Lucy is survived by brother Ray Whitesell and sister Naomi Schmidt both of Burlington. She was preceded in death by a brother, Worth Whitesell and two sisters, Vera Howard and Virginia Cralidis.
Lucy was a Secretary at St. Mark’s Church for many years where she was active in the surrounding community and the church, youth activities and women’s circle groups. She later worked as a Secretary and Bookkeeper at Alamance Secretarial Service, Vogler Realty, Eastern Guilford High School and for Accountant James Holmes, Sr.
“Lulu” was the Matriarch of a very tight knit family that consisted of 28 children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and their spouses and significant others. She left quite a legacy that she enjoyed with pride.
Surviving are a daughter, Missy Musser and husband, Neal of Wilmington; three sons, Max G. Isley, Jr. and Bailey Allard of Chapel Hill, Jeff Isley of Burlington and Van Isley and wife, Jennifer of Raleigh; eight grandchildren, Heather Isley Cotton (Steve) of Seattle, WA, Erin Isley Cordes (Tim) of Raleigh, Kevin Isley of Burlington, Blake Isley of Greenville, SC, Bryn Musser Plummer (Jared) of Greenville, Addison Musser of Raleigh, Jake Isley of Charlotte and Johnny Isley of Los Angeles, CA; and 6 great-grandchildren, Emmett and Riley Cotton, Lauten and Laney Cordes and Bennett and Rhett Plummer.

The family will receive friends and extended family at Rich and Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 19. A brief service will be held in the old Sanctuary at St. Mark’s Church at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 20 with Rev. Ben Bishop officiating.
