Max Gardner Isley
BURLINGTON — Mr. Max Gardner Isley, 80, who retired to Wilmington and moved back to Burlington, died Monday, January 10, 2011, at his residence.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of 61 years to Lucy Whitesell Isley, who survives of the home, and son of the late John Richard Isley and Lizzie Bryan Isley. Max was a building contractor and retired as a public school teacher. He was a member of St. Mark’s Church where he was very active in the church and youth activities as well as Past President of the Consistory. He was also a member of the NEA, the NCAE, where he was a Past President, and the Burlington-Alamance Home Builders Association, where he served as the second President of the association.
Survivingotherthanhiswife are a daughter, Missy Musser and husband Neal of Wilmington; three sons, Max G. Isley Jr. of Wake Forest, Jeff Isley of Burlington and Van Isley and wife Jennifer of Raleigh; eight grandchildren, Heather Isley Cotton, Erin Isley Cordes, Kevin Isley, Blake Isley, Bryn Musser, Addison Musser, Jake Isley and Johnny Isley; and two great-grandchildren, Emmett Cotton and Riley Cotton. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Windham and Una Mahan; and four brothers, Howard Isley, J. R. Isley, Frank Bryan Isley and infant Harvey Isley.
Services will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, January 13, at St. Mark’s Church with the Rev. Ben Bishop officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening and other times at the residence.
