E. John Schmidt 
    BURLINGTON — E. John Schmidt , 84, of 721 Trail Eight, died July 14, 2005 at Moses Cone Extended Care Facility. He was a native of Madison, Wisconsin, and the husband of 61 years of Naomi Whitesell Schmidt , who survives.
    John  retired from a career in sales. He was a member of St. Mark’s Reformed Church, where he served on the Consistory. He served in the church as a former elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent. John  volunteered as a coordinator for Meals on Wheels and was a member for 59 years of The Couples Club. John  enjoyed mountain climbing and hiking especially in the North Carolina mountains.
    Survivors include his wife, Naomi Whitesell Schmidt  of the home; daughters and sonin-law, Sandra and Jesse Albright of Durham and Jan Hall of Raleigh; sons and daughter-in-law, Jay and Ruth Schmidt  of Raleigh and Alan Schmidt  of the home; seven grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren; brother, Warren Schmidt  of Naples, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest John  and Antoinette Richter Schmidt ; sister, Joyce Meshew; and a son-in-law, Roy Hall.
    A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Reformed Church by the Rev. Ben Bishop, and assisted by the Rev. Bob Disher. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the lobby of the church, and at other times at the residence. Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
