 BURLINGTON — Edna Kernodle Whitesell, 88, of Shallotte, N.C., formerly of Burlington, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014, at home.
 
 Edna was the wife of 55 years to the late Newman Harland Whitesell who died in 2001. She was born in Alamance County to the late Ralph Clifton and Geneva Keck Kernodle.
 
 Survivors include two daughters, Melba Whitesell Roelofs and husband Tim of Sneads Ferry, N.C. and Debbie Whitesell Wright and husband Tony of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.; two grandchildren, Carmen Wright Sebastian and husband Matt of Concord, N.C. and Chris Wright and wife Heather of Burlington, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Chloe Wright, Jacob Sebastian and Melina Sebastian; one dear brother, George D. Kernodle and wife Shirley; a dear sister-in-law, Ruby Kernodle; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her special K-9 companion, “Zack”.
 
 She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and a brother, Jack C. Kernodle.
 
 Edna was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed sewing, baking, working in her yard and doing for others. She always put other’s needs before hers.
 
 She was a longtime member of the old West Burlington United Methodist Church prior to moving to the coast.
 
 A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2014, in the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel, with the burial to follow at Pine Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service on Thursday.
 
 In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 27401.
