Rachel Loy Rumbley
BURLINGTON – Rachel Loy Rumbley passed away peacefully September 18, 2016 at Alamance House after many years of declining health.
A native of Alamance County, she was born May 22, 1939 to William Loftin Loy and Omie Hagood Loy, both deceased.
Rachel graduated from Elon College High School and worked for many years in the medical field including Carolina Biological, Kernodle Clinic, UNC, Duke and ARMC.
Rachel was also a successful business woman, event planner, former Sunday school teacher and a strong advocate for causes she believed in.
She was active in the organization of the Central NC Band Festival in 1973 at Western Alamance High School.
A very loving, giving person, she would help anyone that she could.
With Rachel, family always came first. She loved spending time at the beach, music, dancing, and entertaining family and friends.
Rachel was a gifted, creative and artistic person including writing and painting. She won awards for her poetry, fiction, drama, children’s poems and was published in anthologies and local magazines.
She was active in the Burlington Writers Club, NC Poetry Society, the early days of the NC Writers Network and the Friday Noon Poets.
Rachel was also a talented songwriter having her song “Bittersweet Memories of Home” recorded in 1988.
She loved painting landscapes, floral scenes, children’s face and anything that she could to adapt to different occasions and people.
She is survived by brother, Gordon Loy of Burlington and sisters, Brenda Loy Wilson and Debbie Loy Walter (David) of Graham.
Also surviving are special nephews, Jeff Hudgins (Kim) and Mike Williamson and niece, Lisa Henderson.
She was blessed to be surrounded by great nephew, Anthony Morene; great nieces, Emily Morene, Bethany Henderson, Chelsea Hudgins and Syvanna Ball Ponce, her grandchildren are Erika Rumbley, Colin Rumbley, Brianna Pratt and Elliott Pratt. She is also survived by son, Keith Rumbley (Virginia) and daughter, Gina Rumbley.
The funeral service will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Graham on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at 12 p.m. by Rev. Danny Green with the family receiving friends from 11 a.m. til noon prior to the service.
Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the special care Rachel was given by the Memory Care Staff at Alamance House.
