Helene S. Whitesell
ELON — Mrs. Grace Helene Smith Whitesell , age 91, of 1018 N.C. 87 North, passed away Sunday, February 25, 2007, at the Hospice Home.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Otis B. Whitesell , and daughter of the late Ubert Coleman and Verdie Jane Maude Faucette Smith . She was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, the Willing Workers Sunday school class, a lifetime member of the Methodist Women, and she organized the MYF of the church. Mrs. Whitesell was employed by Holt Hosiery for many years, but later retired from the Admissions Dept. of Memorial Hospital of Alamance. After retirement she volunteered as a Pink Lady at the hospital.
Survivors include her husband of 70 years, Otis B. Whitesell of the home; daughters, Hilda Deneece Hodge and husband, Bill, of Burlington, Paula Mogle of Burlington, and Iris Trent and husband, Joe, of Elon; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Louise Pender of Mebane and Margaret Barber of Gibsonville; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Smith of Burlington. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Mitchell Smith and Lacy Smith ; and a son-inlaw, Everett Mogle.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 28, 2007, at Shiloh United Methodist Church by the Rev. Randy Hobbs, and the Rev. Gary Loftis. Interment will follow in Shiloh United Methodist Church cemetery. Mrs. Whitesell will remain at Lowe Funeral Home until taken to the church for the service.
The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening and at other times at the home.

Otis Benjamin Whitesell Dies at 101
ELON — Otis Benjamin Whitesell, 101, passed away Monday, April 7, 2014, at Alamance Health Care.
He was born in Guilford County to the late Eddie Hildrey Rankin Whitesell and Callie Alventine Elizabeth Michael Whitesell and was married to the late Grace Helene Smith Whitesell.
He was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church where he, along with his wife, helped organize the Methodist Youth Fellowship. He was formerly employed by Glen Raven Mills and Falcon Industries. During World War II he was employed by the U.S. Shipyard in Wilmington, Del.
He is survived by his daughters, Hilda Deneece Hodge and husband Bill of Burlington, Paula Mogle of Graham and Iris Trent and husband Joe of Elon; grandchildren, David Hodge and wife Junko of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Jeffrey Hodge and wife Cindy of Staunton, Va., Kim Sellars and husband Baxter of Burlington, Henry Hilliard III and wife Shaunda of Burlington, Anjie Greeson of Mebane, Kelly Carson of Elon, Ashley McHale and husband Brent of Livermore, Calif.; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Margaret Barber of Gibsonville and Evelyn Smith of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and sisters, Zora Smith, Ethel Tate, Christine
Bailey and Jewel Baldwin; and brothers, Conrad, Willie, Dwight, Howard, Brice and James Whitesell; and a son-in-law, Everett Mogle.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Shiloh United Methodist Church by the Rev. Hyung S. Kim, the Rev. Gary Loftis, the Rev. Randy Hobbs and the Rev. Sandra Ireson, with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

100TH BIRTHDAY
Otis Benjamin Whitesell of Elon celebrated his 100th birthday Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013.
He was honored with a birthday party Jan. 13, 2013, at Shiloh UMC Fellowship Hall, given by his sons-in-law and daughters: Bill and Deneece Hodge, Joe and Iris Trent and Paula Mogle.
Mr. Whitesell was married to the late Helene Smith Whitesell for 70 years. In addition to his daughters, his family includes seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-greatgrandchildren.
Otis was born in Guilford County to the late Eddie H.R. and Callie Michael Whitesell and was the seventh of 11 children (10 of whom grew to adulthood). The last of his siblings surviving, he grew up working on his parents’ farm until he started working at Minneola Mill in Gibsonville.
During World War II, Mr. Whitesell worked at the shipyard in Wilmington, Del., building and wiring ships. He retired from Glen Raven Mills then worked at Alamance Country Club before moving on to Falcon Industries, where he worked into his late 80s or early 90s until taking care of his wife at home.
The oldest attending member of Shiloh Church, Otis has a passion for gardening, and he tended one until about two years ago. His answer to a long life: “You’ve got to keep moving.” [2148]
