GIBSONVILLE — Mr. Granville W. “Smitty” Smith, 77, of 3806 High Rock Road, died at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro after a critical illness of nine days. A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of the late Agnes Cagle Smith and the late Ruth J.M. Smith. He was the son of Weldon Oliver Smith and Zora Irene Whitesell Smith, both deceased. He was a former employee of the Department of Transportation, Bridge Department, and of C.J. Kern Construction. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Beverly Smith Johnson of Fayetteville; a son, Mr. Tony R. Smith of Troy; a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Smith Cook of Gibsonville; a brother, Mr. Silas R. Smith of Whitsett; two grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Brown’s Chapel Wesleyan Church, High Rock Road, Gibsonville, by the Rev. Larry Pope, pastor; the Rev. Billy Roy, associate pastor; and the Rev. Allen Myers, pastor of Apples Chapel Christian Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park. The family will be at the Brown’s Chapel Wesleyan Church in Gibsonville from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the residence of the sister, Mrs. Evelyn Smith Cook, 4436 High Rock Road, Gibsonville. The body will remain at Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington until taken to the church for the visitation. Memorials may be made to Northeast Guilford Volunteer Fire Department, Station No. 32, 7806 Jackson School Road, Browns Summit, N.C. 27214.3, Mr. Granville W. Smith
