Obituary for John Franklin Whitesell
John Franklin Whitesell, 79, of Pleasant Garden, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Sunday January 16, 2022. John was born in Guilford County, NC to the late Vance Whitesell and Mattie (Chrismon) Whitesell.
There will be a service to honor his life 2:00 pm, Monday, January 24th, at Pleasant Garden United Methodist Church in Pleasant Garden. The family will receive masked visitors at the church immediately after the services. For those unable to attend, the family is checking on the ability to stream the service on the church’s Facebook page.
John was an electrician maintaining traffic lights with the City of Greensboro for 25 years and achieved his goal of obtaining his electrical license. He received a heart transplant in April 2000 which allowed him to enjoy a wonderful almost 22 years with his family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with family, watching old westerns, boating, camping, and his classic cars. He especially loved spending time with and being a Papaw to his beloved granddaughter Colby. He will be remembered as a caring man of quiet strength devoted to his family. He is and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is predeceased by his parents; brothers, Billy Whitesell and Dwight Whitesell; sister, Louise Whitesell Fogleman and deceased husband "Dewey".
His survivors include his loving wife of more than 58 years, Phyllis Ross Whitesell; sisters, Margaret Whitesell Clapp (Jerry) and Debbie Whitesell Gariglio (Vance), brothers, Gary Whitesell, Michael Whitesell (Karen); daughters, Kimberly Whitesell Brown (Tommy), Sandra Whitesell Walkush (Travis); granddaughter, Colby Brown and other nieces and nephews.
The Family would like to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the staff at Cleveland Clinic and Duke Hospital for the wonderful care he received during and after his heart transplant. We would also like to express our gratitude to Home Helpers of Jamestown and their care givers helping through the past two years.
